Just like my hairstyles last week!!!
I was drawn to this hairy vine curving it’s way up (or down) this tree. I wonder why it chose this particular course. I presume it was not for my visual enjoyment and cool photo opportunity? … OR was it?!?!? Hmmmm, nature, you so crazy.
I see it as there were nutrients and good energy along this tree trunk in the areas that the vine attached to and that paved it’s path through life. The same applies to humans. Bring in good nutrients, walk through life with positive energy, and a beautiful path will unfold before you. And yes, it will be windy and bumpy and throw you off course at times, but all those hurdles are necessary to growth. Breathe through it, love yourself and be open to every adventure that comes your way.
Damn, life is cool.
This morning, I went for a short walk in the woods before my hardcore (not really) weights workout at the gym. I had stopped for a bit to take some photos of morning dew on a bush as a lady walked by with her dog and she told me that there are lots of wild scallions around right now. She said she picked some recently and added that they are much healthier than scallions you could buy in the store … I strongly agreed, of course (if you know me, you would know just how strongly I agreed). Then we got to chatting about eating local and she asked if I was a member of the Cropsey Farm CSA. OMG, someone who speaks my language! Plus, I had been considering joining this CSA. I am so grateful for those people that come along in my life and I can throw out holistic wellness acronyms and they know what I’m talking about. However, I am also extremely grateful for the ones that have no fucking clue what I’m saying, yet are ever so curious and want to learn more.
So, basically, I wanted to be friends with this lady, obviously. She told me to pick wild scallions and that there are lots of wild raspberries to pick here in the summer and told me about a few different CSAs in the area … yeah, her and I should be BFFs. Plus her dog was cute.
I walked back to the car carrying my scallions and on the way grabbed a few dandelion greens to spice (or bitter, rather) up my eggs that I had planned on making when I got home. Wrapped my foraged goods in a towel, went to the gym to get pumped up, then excitedly drove home with a growling stomach to cook my nature snacks!!! The greens on the bottom are spinach that I had at home, 2 pasture-raised over-medium eggs, sauteed scallions and dandelion greens with crushed red pepper and goat cheese on top. You can all wipe up your drool now. It did taste that good too.
Many areas have foraging classes if you have any desire to peruse nature for your food. I have never taken one myself (it’s on my list of things to do one day!), but I know that these 2 things are safe to eat … unless a dog pee’d on them, but I’ll live regardless ;)
Did you know this? I learned of it from my local library. The library is chock full of neat information! ;)
LOOKING FOR LOVE
A strange passion is moving in my head.
My heart has become a bird
which searches in the sky.
Every part of me goes in different directions.
Is it really so
that the one I love is everywhere?
. Rumi .
The mind is restless, unsteady,
hard to guard, hard to control.
The wise one makes it straight,
like a fletcher straightens an arrow.
How good it is to rein in the mind
Which is unruly, capricious, rushing wherever it pleases.
The mind so harnessed will bring one happiness.
Your worst enemy cannot harm you
as much as your own unguarded thoughts.
A well-directed mind creates more happiness
than even the loving actions of your parents.
Buddha Shakyamuni, quoted by Joseph Goldstein
*For those of you that already got an email on this post, I apologize that you are seeing it again. Weirdly, I posted this last night and then it disappeared from WordPress land. I am so confused how this happened, but now I have to just let it go …
If you wanna FEEL some mad crazy emotional shit, listen to this guy, Sean Rowe. And even more so, go see him live. Seriously. It was deep and intense and magical and I got teary and man, I just got chills thinking about it again …
Music helps me feel my heart actually beat (my heart and its beat have been hiding behind layers and layers of barriers keeping me from loving myself and others … thicker walls mean I can’t get hurt, right? Yeah, not so much … that couldn’t be any more opposite of what’s true.). So, music is here to open me up! Give it a whirl and see what transforms for you. XO
Do I really even need to say anything about this?
No, but I will anyway ;)
A lesson in life and love … LET. IT. BE. These words came to mind when I drew this last September. These are words I need to remind myself of often (hence why I’m posting them today). I am always working working working on health, on school, on relationships, on goals, on being active, on feeling good about myself, even relaxing seems like work for me sometimes (seriously! sad face). Often, the less effort you put into something, the more reward you receive. Less work = more joy. Shit, that sounds nice. Now, how do I do that ?!?? Well, my awareness has definitely grown in this area, so I’m headed in the right direction …
Take a moment today to just let it (whatever “it” is for you) be. Smile. Breathe. Meditate. Gaze at the sky. Drink a beer. Do you. Or should I say BE you. :)
I hope you all read that title the way you would’ve said Superman’s name back in the day.
How deliciously beautiful does this look? Seriously, tell me. Weirdly, this is my first food creation post … weird because I create food (as in cooking, not growing … I’ve killed cactus so I have A LOT of work in the growing department) quite often. I suppose I’ve been holding out on you all, maybe so you don’t get jealous of the healthy goodness I eat [almost] every day. Well, now you can get jealous looking at this photo as this is what I ate for breakfast today. On the very bottom is kasha (roasted buckwheat – OMG the smell and taste of this stuff is just amazing … how does it entice my senses so?) cooked with cashew milk. Then that delectable pile on top of the grain consists of a banana, peanuts, raisins, cocoa nibs, hemp seeds, chia seeds, coconut oil and cinnamon. And yes, it tastes as good as it sounds.
For serious, if you eat grains, you aren’t allergic to buckwheat (Jen, I’m talking to you), and you know what’s good for you, then you NEED to try kasha. Follow the directions on the package and if desired, replace the water with your choice of milk (I’ve also made it with ‘Thai Kitchen’ canned coconut milk). The rest of the ingredients I just sprinkle on top, no measuring necessary.
Enjoy gettin’ your kasha on !!!
Does anyone else think that beer is really pretty? Look at the caramel colored crispness of the Pilsner at the top and the chocolaty richness of the Stout (that was my beer) and the frothy gold hue of the IPA … those may not be the best descriptors to give their beauty justice, but I know you can see it too.
Not only do I find beer pretty, but I also love drinking it. There have been a few times in my life where I have cut back on drinking, yet I couldn’t bear to let the beer go. When I was training for my first half marathon (ages ago now), I realized that drinking often was really not helping my body, so I cut back to 1-2 beers once a week when I went out with friends. Then, a few years after that, I was practicing a fairly strict Paleo lifestyle … except that I refused to give up beer (which is far from Paleo!!) and chocolate. These days, I drink a whole lot less than I did when I was living/working in the city and drinking makes me feel crappier now (actually, I’m just more aware of the crappy feeling and no longer using it to drown out my unhappy lifestyle), but I still won’t quit beer. I love beer … looking at it and drinking it (the latter preferred).
Now don’t ask me what this has to do with being creative because I got nothing. I just figured you all would want to see some beautiful beers and hear my story. Next time, you drink a beer, cheers to creativity! Or draw/write something bad ass on your bar napkin (and send me a photo pretty please) … see, creativity can be linked to anything ;)
If you actually made it down to the bottom of this post, I will share with you where these inspiration-invoking questions came from. My wonderful friend Lauren recently moved to the wonderful city of San Francisco. She had visited the The Innovation Hangar a couple months ago when I was starting out this new inspiration-invoking blog, so she sent me these photos to share on my blog (check out the installation pic below). Yes, I’m just now getting around to posting them, and I also had to ask Lauren to resend them as I never saved them to my phone ;) Man, I am too damn honest with you people sometimes.
I hope at least one of these questions sparked something in you! Maybe a thought or maybe you journaled about it or maybe it will come up for you a month from now. Either way, we can all create something magical in this universe together if we stay true to ourselves and follow our passions!!!
